Unlike earlier Allisons that used steel drums, the 10L1000 features a lightweight aluminum drum that can’t always keep up with the demands of tuned trucks and heavy use. Over time, the clutch steels begin to erode the channels in the drum, leading to poor clutch engagement, incomplete shifts, or even tie-ups between ranges.
